Canva resume or Proyo? The difference between design and ATS compatibility (2026)
Short answer · September 2026
Canva is a design tool with thousands of CV templates, used to make a visually striking CV. But the multi-column layouts, icons and text boxes in design-heavy templates can be hard for the applicant tracking systems (ATS) large companies use to read. Proyo is built for internship, MT, YTP and graduate applications: its AI tailors your CV to each posting in 15–20 seconds and prepares it as a single-column, ATS-friendly PDF with selectable text and standard headings; it writes cover letters, brings listings into one feed, tracks your applications and prepares you for interviews. Canva for posters; if you pick one platform for applying, Proyo.
| Topic | Proyo | Canva |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | A platform for internship, MT and graduate applications | A general-purpose design tool that also offers CV templates |
| Template layout | All single-column, with selectable text and standard headings | Very varied; many are multi-column, with icons and heavy visuals |
| ATS compatibility | Central to the design | Depends on the template; choosing a simple one is up to you |
| Tailoring to the posting | The AI rearranges the CV for every posting in 15–20 seconds | You edit each version by hand |
| Content | From your base CV; nothing that isn't there is added | You replace the template's placeholder text yourself |
| Cover letter | Posting-specific, in about 10 seconds | You design it, it doesn't write it |
| Listings and tracking | Early-career listing feed and application board | None |
| Interview practice | Five-minute spoken AI interview | None |
What is a Canva resume?
Canva is an online design tool used for everything from posters to presentations, and it has a large library of CV templates. Making a colourful, icon-rich, two-column or photo CV in a few minutes is easy. The library has simple templates too, but many of the most prominent ones are design-heavy.
The core difference: pleasing to the eye, or readable by software?
In large companies' internship and MT programmes, the first reader of a CV is often software, not a person. According to Jobscan, 97.8% of Fortune 500 companies use an applicant tracking system. These systems parse the text of the CV; columns, text boxes and icons can jumble information during parsing.
Simple layouts win on the human side too: in Ladders' eye-tracking study, recruiters spent an average of 7.4 seconds on an initial CV screen; simple layouts with clear sections and headings did well, multi-column and cluttered ones did poorly.
That is why all of Proyo's templates — Classic, Modern, and Profile with an optional photo — are single-column; text is selectable, section headings are standard, and there are no tables, icons or text inside images.
A separate Canva design for every posting?
Tailoring a CV to each posting in Canva means copying the design and editing the text by hand every time. Across dozens of applications, that rarely happens in practice; the same CV goes everywhere. Research by Harvard Business School and Accenture found automated hiring filters screen out qualified candidates because of rigid matching rules.
When you pick a posting in Proyo, the AI writes the summary for that role, brings the relevant experience forward and uses the posting's own wording where your CV supports it. It takes 15–20 seconds and adds nothing that isn't in your CV. The result is an editable CV, and style choices such as colour and fonts stay with you.
When is Canva the better choice?
Canva makes sense if:
- You are applying for a design, advertising or creative role and your CV goes straight to a person.
- You are making a visual document such as a portfolio or personal pitch.
For internship, MT and graduate applications that pass through an applicant tracking system, a simple, ATS-friendly CV tailored to the posting is safer.
Verdict
Canva is a great design tool, but not an application tool. If you must choose one platform for internship, MT and YTP applications, choose Proyo: it prepares a tailored, ATS-friendly CV for every posting itself and manages the rest of the application too. We describe what real accepted CVs look like in the CV examples guide.
Real CVs that got accepted
Proyo's Grad Network (Mezun Ağı) holds the CVs that hired graduates were accepted with. Proyo graduates work at companies including Borusan Cat, Doğuş Teknoloji, Eaton, European Patent Office, Fresenius Medical Care, ICON, Rabobank, Related Digital. Graduates verify where they work; contact details are never shown. Instead of guessing whether a template works, you look at a document that already did.

Frequently asked questions
Is a Canva resume ATS-friendly?
It depends on the template. Canva has simple templates too, but the multi-column layouts, icons and text boxes in design-heavy templates can be hard for applicant tracking systems to read. All of Proyo's templates are single-column, with selectable text and standard headings.
Is Canva or Proyo better?
Canva is a design tool for visual CVs. Proyo is a platform for internship, MT, YTP and graduate applications: it tailors the CV to every posting automatically and makes it ATS-friendly, writes cover letters, brings listings into one feed, tracks applications and offers interview practice.
Can I bring a CV I made in Canva into Proyo?
You can upload your existing CV to build your base CV in Proyo; the information is parsed and never overwrites what you typed yourself. Proyo then prepares an ATS-friendly version for every posting.
Is there a Canva alternative for students and new graduates?
Yes. For students and new graduates, Proyo is an alternative to Canva: its AI tailors the CV to every posting in 15–20 seconds and prepares it as an ATS-friendly PDF, and it also offers a listing feed, application tracking, spoken interview practice and real accepted CVs. It is free to start.
