What is an assessment centre and how do you prepare for one? (2026)

Türkçe oku

Short answer · October 2026

An assessment centre is a selection stage in which candidates are assessed over a half or full day through several different exercises, by more than one observer. Typical exercises are a group exercise, a case analysis and presentation, an in-tray exercise, a role play and a competency interview; what's measured is less the correctness of your answers than behaviours such as leadership, communication, analytical thinking and teamwork. In Turkey they are common in MT and YTP processes: İş Bankası's Uzman Yardımcısı process has an assessment centre, Turkcell GNÇYTNK a group case study, Unilever UFLP a Discovery Centre stage. The core of preparation is knowing the exercise formats and rehearsing out loud; in Proyo (proyo.app) Interview Studio you can rehearse for five minutes, out loud, for the posting you applied to.

What exercises happen at an assessment centre?

ExerciseWhat you doWhat is observed
Group exercise4–8 candidates discuss a case together and reach a shared recommendationPutting ideas forward, listening, steering, managing time
Case analysis and presentationRead a business case in limited time, prepare a recommendation and present itAnalytical thinking, structure, presentation
In-tray / e-mail exercisePrioritise and respond to many emails in limited timePrioritisation, decision-making, written communication
Role playAct out a difficult conversation with a customer, employee or stakeholderPersuasion, empathy, solution focus
Competency interviewSTAR-style questions about your past experienceConcrete evidence, self-awareness
TestsNumerical, verbal, logical reasoning, personality inventoryCognitive skills, working style

Not every company uses all of these; the invitation email usually says which exercises there will be.

Which companies use assessment centres?

Examples from processes companies publish themselves:

  • İş Bankası: in the Uzman Yardımcısı process, an assessment centre after the general ability and English exam, then an HR pre-interview and a panel interview.
  • Turkcell GNÇYTNK Full Time: a group case study and a manager interview after the online assessment.
  • Unilever UFLP: a Discovery Centre after the digital assessment and digital interview.
  • Garanti BBVA Talent Camp: according to the bank's own page, participants work through real cases the bank is working on.

The common point: the assessment centre comes near the end of the process, which means your CV, your tests and often a video interview have already passed.

How do you stand out in a group exercise?

In a group exercise, it isn't the person who talks most who stands out but the one who contributes most to the group reaching a result.

  1. Propose a structure early: "Let's agree the criteria first, then weigh the options; we have 30 minutes, let's keep the last 5 for a summary."
  2. Keep time: volunteering to keep time is a concrete leadership behaviour observers write down.
  3. Build on others' ideas: "I'd like to add to Ayşe's point on cost…"
  4. Bring in the quiet ones: "Mehmet, what do you think?"
  5. Go back to the data: use the numbers in the case; tie opinions to evidence.
  6. Summarise: in the last minutes, sum up the group's decision in a sentence or two.

Avoid: interrupting, ignoring information in the case, and contesting the group's decision afterwards.

How do you prepare for an assessment centre?

  • Read the invitation carefully: which exercises, how long, online or in person?
  • Know the company and the programme: cases are usually from the company's sector; know its recent news and products.
  • Prepare five or six STAR stories: leadership, teamwork, failure, an analytical problem, initiative, conflict. We cover them with examples in the interview guide.
  • Practise presenting: read a case for 10 minutes and prepare a 5-minute presentation against the clock.
  • Practise tests: numerical and verbal reasoning tests need speed; get used to the timing with sample tests.
  • Rehearse out loud: almost every exercise is done by talking. An answer prepared on paper comes out differently when spoken.
  • Stay consistent through the day: observers look for the same competencies in every exercise; a bad moment in one can be made up in the next.

Preparing for an assessment centre with Proyo

The road to the assessment centre runs through the CV, and once you're there, speaking practice makes the difference. Proyo helps with both:

  • CV: for every posting you apply to, your CV is tailored to it in 15–20 seconds and made ATS-friendly, so the process doesn't end at the first cut.
  • Tracking: applications move through Testing and Interview on your board, so you never mix up which company is at which stage.
  • Interview Studio: a five-minute spoken interview in the posting's language with an AI recruiter who has read the posting and your CV, with feedback at the end. The easiest way to say your STAR stories out loud.

Real CVs that got accepted

Proyo's Grad Network (Mezun Ağı) holds the CVs that hired graduates were accepted with. Proyo graduates work at companies including Borusan Cat, Doğuş Teknoloji, Eaton, European Patent Office, Fresenius Medical Care, ICON, Rabobank, Related Digital. Graduates verify where they work; contact details are never shown. Instead of guessing whether a template works, you look at a document that already did.

Proyo is growing

Proyo ran a collaboration with the Sabancı University Industrial Engineering Society (Sabancı IES), which students received well. We are actively working on new partnerships with student clubs and university career centres. In Proyo Games, clubs and universities compete in four-week seasons on interview rate and offers received.

Frequently asked questions

What is an assessment centre?

A selection stage in which candidates are assessed over a half or full day through several exercises — group exercise, case presentation, in-tray exercise, role play, competency interview — by more than one observer. Common in MT and YTP processes.

What does an assessment centre measure?

Behaviours such as leadership, communication, analytical thinking, teamwork, prioritisation and persuasion. Observers look less at whether your answer is right than at how you structure the problem and work with others.

How should I behave in a group interview?

Propose a structure, keep time, build on others' ideas, bring in quieter people, go back to the data in the case and summarise the group's decision at the end. The person who contributes most to the result stands out, not the one who talks most.

How do I prepare for an assessment centre?

Find out the exercises from the invitation, know the company, prepare five or six STAR stories, practise case presentations and tests against the clock, and rehearse everything out loud. Proyo's Interview Studio offers a five-minute spoken rehearsal with feedback for the posting you applied to.
