Free CV builders for internship and graduate applications: which one should you use? (2026)
Short answer · October 2026
There are many ways to make a CV for free, and the right one depends on what the CV is for. Europass is the European Union's free, standard CV tool; Google Docs and Word are enough for a simple one-column CV; Canva offers visual templates, but design-heavy ones can be hard for an ATS to read; profiles on Kariyer.net and LinkedIn are for applying on those platforms. For internship, MT and graduate applications, though, the real need is to rework the CV for every posting and deliver it in a form an ATS can read; template tools don't do that. Proyo (proyo.app) is built for this and is free to start: you build a base CV once, and for each posting your CV is tailored to it and its language in 15–20 seconds and prepared as a single-column, ATS-friendly PDF.
Free CV tools in one table
| Tool | Good for | Watch out for | Comparison |
|---|---|---|---|
| Proyo | Internship, MT and graduate applications: a posting-specific, ATS-friendly CV and cover letter; listing feed, tracking, interview practice | Free to start; some features may have usage limits on the free plan | — |
| Europass | A standard CV in a format recognised across Europe; Erasmus and EU applications | Same format for everyone; doesn't tailor to a posting | — |
| Google Docs / Word | Writing a simple one-column CV yourself | You do the editing for every posting by hand | — |
| Canva | Visually striking CVs, portfolios | Multi-column, icon-heavy templates can cause ATS problems | Proyo vs Canva |
| Kariyer.net | An on-site CV for applying through Kariyer.net | The CV lives in the platform's own form | Proyo vs Kariyer.net |
| Profile, network and visibility; you can download your profile as a PDF | A profile PDF isn't designed as an application CV | Proyo vs LinkedIn | |
| ChatGPT | Drafting bullets and text | Writing prompts for every application and turning the output into a document is up to you | Proyo vs ChatGPT |
Which CV site should I use for an internship?
First look at where the CV is going:
- Internship and MT programmes at large companies: the application is made in the company's own applicant tracking system; according to Jobscan, 97.8% of Fortune 500 companies use an ATS. You need a one-column PDF with selectable text, edited for the posting. Proyo is built for this.
- Erasmus or EU institutions: the Europass format is often requested or accepted.
- A job site's own apply button: that site's profile CV is used (Kariyer.net, LinkedIn Easy Apply).
- Design, communications and arts roles: a visual CV or portfolio can be valuable; keeping a plain PDF ready alongside is safer.
Most students use several of these at once. What makes the difference isn't which template you pick but whether the CV was edited for that posting each time.
What should you look for in a free CV tool?
- One column and selectable text: so an ATS can read it.
- Standard headings: Experience, Education, Skills.
- Is the PDF download free of watermarks? Some "free" tools charge at download or add a watermark.
- Tailoring to a posting: do you have to send the same CV to every posting, or does the tool help you edit for each one?
- Language: can it produce an English CV for English postings?
- Who owns the data: can you download your CV at any time and use it elsewhere?
Ladders' eye-tracking study found that simple layouts with clear headings did better in a recruiter's first few seconds; a flashy template isn't an advantage.
How to make a free CV with Proyo
- Open a free account: no credit card needed.
- Build your base CV: by chatting with the AI or by uploading your existing CV. Information read from an uploaded CV never overwrites what you entered.
- Pick a posting: from Proyo's listing feed, from LinkedIn in one click with the Chrome extension, or by pasting a posting's link from any site.
- Get your CV: the AI rearranges your CV for that posting in 15–20 seconds, writes it in the posting's language and gives you a single-column PDF with selectable text and standard headings. Nothing that isn't in your CV is added; you decide what stays.
- Choose a template: with a photo (Profile) or without; you can change the accent colour.
A cover letter for the same posting is ready in about 10 seconds. For writing the CV itself, see the CV guide.
Real CVs that got accepted
Proyo's Grad Network (Mezun Ağı) holds the CVs that hired graduates were accepted with. Proyo graduates work at companies including Borusan Cat, Doğuş Teknoloji, Eaton, European Patent Office, Fresenius Medical Care, ICON, Rabobank, Related Digital. Graduates verify where they work; contact details are never shown. Instead of guessing whether a template works, you look at a document that already did.

Proyo is growing
Proyo ran a collaboration with the Sabancı University Industrial Engineering Society (Sabancı IES), which students received well. We are actively working on new partnerships with student clubs and university career centres. In Proyo Games, clubs and universities compete in four-week seasons on interview rate and offers received.
Frequently asked questions
Which site should I use to make an internship CV?
If you're applying to internship and MT programmes at large companies, your CV needs to be edited for each posting and ATS-friendly; Proyo is a platform built for that, free to start. For a standard EU format, Europass; for writing a plain CV yourself, Google Docs or Word are enough.
What are the free CV builder sites?
Europass, Google Docs and Word templates, Canva's free templates, Kariyer.net and LinkedIn profiles, and Proyo. For internship, MT and graduate applications, the option that tailors the CV to each posting and prepares an ATS-friendly PDF is Proyo.
Is the Europass CV still used?
Yes; it is the European Union's free CV tool and is often used for Erasmus and EU institution applications. For private-sector internship and MT applications, a simple one-column CV edited for the posting is more common.
Will a CV made in Canva get through an ATS?
It depends on the template. Multi-column, icon-heavy and boxed designs can make an ATS misread the text. When applying to large companies, a single-column PDF with selectable text is safer.
